Orsaken till att flera program används är för att de kompletterar varandra vad gäller hydrologi verktyg.WBG är ett opensource java baserat program som har bra verktyg för att bränns in diken. 2 meters modellen från lantmäteriverket är så noggrann att diken oftast finns med i höjdmodellen men vägar utgör ofta blockeringar i flödet och därför måste platser där vägtrummor finns brännas i höjdmodellen. Trummorna som användes var från gamla vägdatabasarkivet tillsammans med diken från terrängdatabasen. Båda är bristfälliga och vad gäller trummor fanns enbart uppgifter om deras placering på landskapets ägda vägar. På de området där det inte finns 2 meters höjdmodell användes en grövre 10 meters modell. I den brändes diken som helheter in i höjdmodellen. Små \u201ddikessnuttar\u201d utan koppling till kusten plockades bort.När trummor och diken bränts in används breach depressions för att få bort celler som saknar flöden. När man fått de \u201ddepressionslösa höjdmodellerna\u201d togs de in i ArcGIS för flow direction analysen. Whitebox har också flow direction men rastervärdena betyder olika riktningar i WBG jämfört med ArcGIS. Det betyder att det lönar sig att göra flow direction lagret i den programvara där man kommer att göra avrinningsanalysen. WBG har även bra verktyg för själva avrinningsanalysen men ArcGIS är effektivare och klarar av större raster jämfört med WBG samt att vid tester av WBGs avrinningsanalys blev det en nodata skarv mellan ihopklistrade raster vilket ledde till att flödet brast alltid vid raster skarvar. På grund av det valdes ArcGIS watershed verktyg som grund till avrinningsområdena. QGIS har via både saga gis och grassgis hydrologi verktyg. För att få delavrinningsområden (subasins) användes QGIS r.watershed för att räkna ut dem mer automatiskt och för att jämföra samt korrigera där ArcGIS inte lyckats räkna ut avrinningsområden.Avrinningsområdena gjordes för vattenförekomsterna enligt vattendirektivet, eftersom de togs fram för HYPE-modellen, där avrinningsområdena skall vara synkade mot vattenförekomsterna). Avrinningsområden gjordes även för en del sjöar och kompletterades med QGIS delavrinningsområdena.AllmäntI materialet finns fel i flödet där man kan se att vägar blockerar flödet. I brist på heltäckande uppgifter om trummor och diken så kunde inte felen korrigeras. Men i flera fall var recepientområdet (vattenförekomsten) den samma så att delavriningen på land far lite fel har inte så stor inverkan på slutresultatet. Kustvattenförekomsterna har klippts bort från materialet, men sjöarna har inte tagits bort, då de är en del av landområdet.
